AN OPERATIOn to clamp down on motoring offences committed on the A590 will get underway next week.

Cumbria Police will launch a two-day operation which will see officers observe the behaviour of motorists on the busy road which connects the M6 at Junction 36 to Barrow-in-Furness.

Officers from Cumbria Constabulary's Operational Support Unit will conduct Operation Natterjack which has had previous success on the A66 over the past two years.

A two-week operation this year resulted in 152 motorists caught breaking the law.

Inspector Phil Davidson said: “While this year’s operation on the A66 saw a large number of offenders, it was ultimately disappointing to see the low standard of driving some motorists display.

“It only takes a slight lapse in concentration to be involved in a serious and potentially fatal road traffic collision. We still see motorists behaving recklessly on the county’s roads using mobile devices whilst at the wheel.

"We hope that by conducting the operation on the A590 we can influence motorists' attitudes and behaviour on the county’s roads."

The operation will be conducted on 25th and 26th November and will see officers observe the behaviour of motorists on the A590 and they will be stopping vehicles who commit offences.

Police & Crime Commissioner Richard Rhodes said: “Road safety is a big issue in the county, and a subject that is often raised with me by members of the public.

"I therefore welcome this police operation, and urge motorists to think about their behaviour behind the wheel and drive safely.”
