In our design field we are constantly aware of image and presentation. We have to be, and yes it should come naturally.

I am proud to have two designer parents, my dad specialised as a tailor of fine haute couture, my mum designed and modelled their couture with more elegance and chic than any other. So, when I opted out of the family business into fine art and design, and interiors became my vocation, there was no surprise how highly I regarded appearance and style.

For us, it really is all about first impressions and the upholding of standards. One should insist on consistency and quality in all areas of life. We joke a little in the studio, when one of us arrives in the morning fully clad in the same texture and tones as the other, often I co-ordinate with the schemes I am working on that day. Pre meditated? Who knows what the subconscious gets up to? If colour and coordination is not important to you, then you probably won’t be found in a design studio

We are excited at being invited to spread this impact into commercial situations as well as private. The hotel work becomes our showcase to the public, as naturally private homes are not so accessible. Therefore, we are now truly delighted that this influence is spreading into the appearance, and presentation of one of our most well established and respected schools in the area.

Sedbergh School has a distinct style and personality. Its surroundings in the Yorkshire moors and fells are fundamental to the enjoyment and characteristics of the school. Quality, consistency and success is paramount to the staff, pupils and parents alike. It is so brilliant that they proudly and enthusiastically want to exude this style and progress out there through their interiors. Prospective pupils and parents will sense this attention to detail on visiting the school. Every visitor who walks through the door should experience their warmth and pride in their product. The Sedbergh “Brand” is being enhanced by the up grading and refurbishment of the pupils’ houses, of which there are many! A whole town actually. So it may take some time, but the wheels are in motion and the fresh design approach put in place with Sedgwick House this summer and soon Brackensgyhll early in the New Year, are beginning to seep through.

I trust the country style is emphasised through the new furnishings and fittings, some rather masculine in the form of antler pendants in the boys’ dining hall, and some pretty and fashionable in the form of Emma Bridgewater cushion fabrics for the girls. I hope the pupils are enjoying the attention as the new paint schemes, accent fabrics and lighting add a new lease of life. As a boarding school it is of the utmost importance that they feel at home, when away from home. And the parents are comfortable and relaxed in their choice for their children. At Sedbergh they certainly do.
