THE Lancaster Canal Trust is celebrating its golden jubilee.

The trust has published a special supplement - called 50 Years On! - to salute "those who had the vision and resolve to strive for the restoration of the Lancaster Canal for the past half century".

The booklet looks back at the history of the trust, which is working towards full restoration of the waterway's Northern Reaches, between Kendal and Tewitfield. The publication is enclosed with the trust's autumn/winter Waterwitch magazine. In his comments, Waterwitch editor David Currington writes: "Yes, it is 50 years ago that some stalwart people, incensed at the perceived high-handedness of the Government in proposing to effectively close what we now know as the Northern Reaches, banded together to put up some sterling resistance."

Mr Currington says that although "outright celebrations" are not yet due, the 50th anniversary is an occasion to recognise those trust members who have "carried the torch" for many years.
