THE Environment Agency is proposing a new £5.2 million flood alleviation scheme for Town Beck in Ulverston to reduce flood risk to almost 300 local homes and businesses.

The proposed scheme will involve: construction of new raised flood defences along the open sections of Town Beck; repair and refusbishment of the culverts (underground water courses) along Town Beck; construction of a new culvert underneath the railway embankment at Lund Terrace and construction of a new flood storage area in the natural flood plain downstream of the railway.

The proposed flood storage area will include a flow control structure that will allow water along Town Beck under normal conditions but will prevent storm flows from passing downstream. Under these conditions flows will back up behind the structure until they are safe to release.  The flood storage area will use the natural geography to contain flows meaning that there will be no increase in flood risk to other areas of Ulverston as a result of the proposed scheme.

The construction of the scheme is estimated to be £5.2 million. This has come from central government funding for flood defences, which also includes contributions from Cumbria County Council and Network Rail.

The scheme has already been granted planning permission and following public consultation the proposed scheme is scheduled to begin construction in spring 2015.
