A NEW £5.2 million flood alleviation scheme for Town Beck in Ulverston is planned by the Environment Agency to reduce flood risk to almost 300 local homes and businesses.

The proposed scheme will involve building new raised flood defences along the open sections of Town Beck; repair and refurbishment of underground water courses; construction of a new culvert underneath the railway embankment at Lund Terrace and the creation of a new flood storage area in the natural flood plain downstream of the railway.

The proposed flood storage area will include a flow control structure that will allow water along Town Beck under normal conditions but will prevent storm flows from passing downstream. Under these conditions flows will back up behind the structure until they are safe to release.

The money for the scheme will come from central government funding for flood defences, which also includes contributions from Cumbria County Council and Network Rail.

The scheme has already been granted planning permission and following public consultation construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2015.
