A GRANGE man who set out on a destructive spree by 'punching and headbutting' cars has been fined.

Daniel Thomas Herbert, of Fell Drive, Grange-over-Sands, was handed a curfew and ordered to pay almost £600 when he appeared at South Lakeland Magistrates' Court.

The 22-year-old pleaded guilty to three counts of criminal damage to property under £5,000 when he appeared at the same court on November 5.

In prosecution, Lisa Hine said police received a report at around 10.15pm on October 18 of a man "going mental" outside Fish Over Chips, on Kents Bank Road, Grange-over-Sands.

The court heard the 'drunk and agitated' defendant had been seen collapsed on the floor, and then walked out in front of a car, letting out a low pitched scream and continuously head butting a phone box and blue Renault Clio, denting it and damaging the paintwork.

After locating Herbert in the back of an ambulance, police found a black Ford Focus left with a buckled and damaged rear offside door, and a black Honda Civic with a dent and damage to the windscreen, the court was told.

Herbert was later found by police in the back of an ambulance which took him to hospital.

Ms Hine told the court in an interview the defendant said he had drunk two bottles of beer and admitted kicking and punching the Ford Focus and head butting the phone box.

She added that he had been "cleaning up his drugs problem" and was on anti-depressants.

Herbert was given a three month curfew from 7pm to 7am and a community order for 12 months with a 12 month supervision order when he appeared on November 26.

He was also ordered to attend eight sessions of Cumbria Drug Awareness and pay £100 for damage to the Ford Focus, £420 for damage to the Renault Clio and £60 for damage to the Honda Civic.
