POLICE are urging the owners of vacant properties to take precautions after a spate of break-ins.

They have had a number of crimes reported in Kendal during the last month where criminals have gained entry into empty houses and stolen items.

A property on Wray Close, Kendal, was broken into and jewellery was stolen on November 28.

On several occasions, entry has been forced using garden tools located outside the houses and police are warning people not to make it easy for criminals by leaving items on the property.

A spokesperson said: "Be vigilant and make sure properties are secure and do not leave items freely available outside.

"Use other security measures in order to make the property seem lived in."

Anybody with information should contact Cumbria Police on 101 and ask to speak to PC 554 Jack Montague.

Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
