FOUR young people took over South Lakes Housing for the day as part of the Children's Commissioner's Takeover Day 2014.

The nationwide event gave the younger generation an opportunity to shadow jobs, help make decisions and give their opinions on key issues.

Four young people from South Lakeland Young Carers gained an insight into daily decision-making and long-term strategic planning as they shadowed Peter Thomas, chief executive of the not-for-profit social housing provider.

Bryannie Hine, 15, of Kendal's Queen Katherine School, said “I have learnt that there is more than just sitting behind a desk. It also increased my ability to develop ideas and creative talents."

Young carer support worker Faye Waites said: “This was a great opportunity for young people to learn new skills and be inspired. Young carers often have low expectations of themselves and so opportunities like this are essential for them to realise their true potential."

Chief executive Mr Thomas said he thought the day was a brilliant idea. "These young carers are very inspirational people. They are a real credit to their families and schools."
