FOUR people have been arrested in Kendal as part of last night's 'Festive Friday' celebrations.

Police based at the town's Busher Walk took to Twitter to keep residents updated as locals partied in the town's bars and pubs to celebrate the last Friday before Christmas.

"Festive Friday so far looks to have passed pretty well," they said.

"Four people found their way into the cells during the night."

But a Barrow Police spokesman said their night had been busier - and by 2am their cells were full.

"It started off quietly but the cells are now full, next one's off to Kendal," they tweeted.

"The clubs are still open for another 3 hours. #lostitonlager"

The night, also also known as Black Eye Friday, is traditionally the day people finish work for the festive season.

Police in Ulverston, using the hashtag 'BlackEyefriday', also used social media to warn local people about the dangers of drinking beyond their limits.

"Who's taking you home tonight?" they asked. "Don't let it be a vehicle with blue flashing lights on the roof!"

This morning a Lancashire Police spokesman reminded people not to drink and drive - and highlighted the fact that alcohol can remain in the system the next day.

"The effects of alcohol are not mitigated by sleep, caffeine or a cold shower!" they said.

"Only time can make you sober."

Nobody was available at Cumbria police this morning to say what the four arrests in Kendal were for.
