ULVERSTON looks set to form a transatlantic partnership to match that of its most famous son, Stan Laurel.
The Furness town is planning to forge links with the tiny city of Harlem, Georgia – the home town of Laurel’s long-standing comedy partner Oliver Hardy.
Ulverston Town Council has written to the mayor of Harlem about the two becoming “friendship towns”.
The arrangement will be a more informal partnership than with Ulverston’s official twin town of Albert in France.
Harlem, like Ulverston, has its own Laurel and Hardy Museum, and holds an annual Harlem Oliver Hardy Festival on the first Saturday in October.
It has a population of just over 2,600, compared with Ulverston’s 11,500.
