GRIDLOCK has become a nightly occurrence on a quiet country lane thanks to a dazzling display of Christmas cheer.

Visitors from right across the North West now descend every night on the quiet village of Cark-in-Cartmel thanks to residents, Jeremy and Mandy Voakes', whose home is covered in around 400 sets of lights.

"Last night I looked out of the window for a couple of minutes and in that time about 20 or 30 cars went past," explained Jeremy.

"They're just nose-to-tail all night!"

The Grange-over-Sands vet explained he and his wife have decorated their home every year for several years, but said this year's lights are 'bigger and better' than ever.

Word has spread and now people from as far away as Yorkshire and Preston are journeying to the area - and staying in pubs and B&Bs - to see the display, which costs around £6 every night to power.

The bill is footed by the family, who also leave a collection box outside their home for the NSPCC.

Since the lights were switched on, on December 1, visitors have donated around £1,000. The lights will stay on until January 5, although it will be March before they are all taken down and put away.
