A CAR burst into flames following a seven-vehicle smash on the M6.

The main carriageway was closed between Junction 36 (Kirkby Lonsdale) and Junction 37 (Sedbergh/Kendal) after the multi-vehicle crash at around 2.30pm on Saturday (January 3).

A Volkswagen Touran set alight after the collision involving a Mercedes Sprinter van and a Land Rover Freelander.

But Cumbria Police said there were no injuries to any driver or passenger.

The force said the drivers in the crash included a woman from Epsom, a man from Nantwich, a woman from Penicuik, a woman from Kenilworth and a driver from Coventry.

A spokesperson for Cumbria Fire and Rescue service said: "Crews wearing breathing apparatus used hose reel jets to put the fire out.

"A large fan was also used to blow the smoke clear of the motorway."

The main carriageway was closed altogether but lane three reopened at around 4pm.

Two lanes were closed overnight while emergency repairs were carried out on the road.
