WORK has begun to create the first stage of a £350 million bio-pharmaceutical development at GlaxoSmithKline's North Lonsdale base. The construction work to dig up the staff car park and create a new gatehouse marks the beginning of a phased operation to build a state-of-the-art research and production plant at the factory, creating around 700 jobs.

It is three years since Prime Minister David Cameron announced that Ulverston would host the facility. Detailed 'reserved matters' plans, revealing how the next phase of development could look once completed, will be submitted to South Lakeland District Council later this year with building work expected to begin in 2016.
