THE Met Office has issued yellow warnings of wind and rain in the North West, including Cumbria.

It says that, "Southwesterly winds will increase to bring gusts of 50-60 mph, with the risk of local 70 mph. The public should be aware of the risk of disruption to transport."

It also said: "Heavy and persistent rain is expected to affect some western areas from Friday afternoon into Saturday morning, heaviest over western facing hills.

"The public should be aware of the risk of minor disruption from localised flooding.

The warnings are valid from 9pm-8am (wind) and 3pm-9am (rain).

Electricity North West said 88 homes in Sedbergh, Orton and Penrith were still without power after 'severe weather overnight'. A spokesperson said engineers were working to restore power "as quickly as possible.

There were reports of some travel disruption this morning after high winds battered Cumbria overnight.

Two lorries were blown over between Tebay and Shap - one on the northbound carriageway and one on the southbound - causing some lane closures.

There are also reports of a tree having fallen on to a car on the A592 near the Windermere Steamboat Museum between Bowness and Cook's House Corner.

Cumbria Police said a number of roads were blocked this morning due to fallen trees including Rayrigg Road, Windermere, Lindeth Drive, Windermere Sandes Avenue, Kendal and the B5286 at Outgate, Ambleside.

The Environment Agency has issued 14 flood alerts - the lowest level of alert - for rivers in the area.

These are:

* Rivers Brathay, Rothay and Winster

* Rivers Kent and Bela

* Rivers Duddon, Crake and Mill Beck

* River Eden and tributaries from Temple Sowerby to the confluence with the River Irthing at Warwick Bridge including Langwathby, Lazonby, Kirkoswald, Armathwaite, Wetheral and Warwick on Eden

* Rivers Esk and Irthing

* Rivers Ehen, Calder, Irt and Esk

* Rivers Wampool and Ellen

* Rivers Eamont and Lowther to their confluence with the River Eden at Langwathby

* Rivers Caldew and Petteril from the Lakeland Fells to their confluences with the Eden in Carlisle including Greystoke, Newton Reigny, Plumpton, Stockdalewath, Sebergham and Dentonholme in Carlisle

* Upper River Eden

* River Derwent from Keswick to Bassenthwaite. The Rivers Greta, Glenderamackin and St Johns Beck including Keswick

* River Eden and its tributaries from its confluence with the River Irthing through Crosby-on-Eden and Carlisle to the Solway Firth at Rockcliffe

* Lower Derwent from Bassenthwaite Lake to the coast at Workington. The Cocker from Crummock Water to Cockermouth. The River Marron from Ullock to its confluence with the Derwent near Bridgefoot

* The Upper Derwent from Seathwaite to Derwent Water
