A 91-YEAR-OLD who was in the back of a car which was involved in a crash with a HGV on the M6 last night has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The elderly woman was a passenger in a Citroen Synergie which was involved in a collision with a DAF HGV truck at around 5.40pm just north of junction 34 (Lancaster).

Lancashire Police said the two vehicles collided in lane two resulting in the car spinning to the central reservation and then back across the three lanes into the nearside barrier.

The driver and front passenger of the car suffered minor injuries.

The pensioner was taken to Royal Lancaster Infirmary with a suspected fractured sternum, ribs and injury to her right foot.

One lane of the motorway was closed for around four hours following the incident.   

PS Finn Quainton of the Road Policing Team said: “It was a busy time of the evening when this collision occurred so I would urge any motorists who may have witnessed the collision to contact us with any information they may have that could help us to establish exactly how the collision occurred and to help us with our enquiries.”
