A PIECE of equipment that helps treat women with pre-cancerous and cancerous lesions of the cervix is to be installed at Kendal's hospital thanks to generous donations from locals.

The diathermy equipment, alongside a new low frequency ultrasound probe and a new clinical chair, will be paid for by The League of Friends of Westmorland General Hospital, a charity which supports the work of University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT) and patients at Westmorland General Hospital, after it received a £15,000 donation.

Dr Alison Sambrook, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, said: "This is fantastic timing as this week is Cervical Cancer Awareness Week. This important equipment that enhances care for women will help treat women with abnormal smears and can help prevent cancer developing. I would encourage all women across the Morecambe Bay area who are overdue their smear test or who may be worried about any symptoms to book an appointment at their GP’s today”.

Aaron Cummins, deputy chief executive and director of finance said: “Over the years, donations from the local community and general public have allowed the League of Friends of Westmorland General Hospital to donate more than £1.3 million to the hospital, which is a staggering amount of money."
