TRIBUTES are being paid to a much loved outdoor enthusiast who tragically lost his life in a windsurfing accident.

Giles Stothert, 61, was born in Ormskirk but moved to Holme and then to Kendal in his late teens.

A huge search was launched for Giles when he was reported missing after failing to return from a windsurfing expedition on the Lune Estuary near his home in Glasson Dock, Lancaster.

His body was discovered 18 hours after his disappearance at 10.15am on Monday, January 26.

His wife, Joan, spoke of Giles' passion for South Lakeland's outdoor activities, especially fell walking, cycling and sailing.

Giles owned a boat, The Lytham Pilot, which he regularly sailed on his favourite lake at Coniston.

He also completed the coast to coast bike ride twice and passed his love of the outdoors onto his son, Alex, 28, who now works as an outdoor pursuits instructor in Ulverston.

Joan described Giles as being 'outgoing and friendly' and said that 'he would make friends with strangers at the drop of a hat'.

He leaves behind his wife, Joan, his son, Alex, and his daughter, Kate, 24.

A funeral will be held for Giles at 11.15am on Friday, February 6, at St Michael's Church in Cockerham.

The family have instructed that all are welcome.
