OFFICERS have made an arrest after a pensioner was defrauded out of thousands of pounds following the theft of their passbook.

A 22-year-old man, from Millom, was arrested on suspicion of theft, fraud and possession with intent to supply a controlled Class B drug, namely cannabis.

He has been bailed until the 15th March 2015.

Earlier, police released a CCTV image of a man wanted in connection with the theft from a pensioner in South Lakeland.

Cumbria police released an image as part of the investigation into the theft of a passbook in Ulverston where an offender has subsequently made fraudulent transactions of more than £1,800.

A spokesperson for the force said the passbook was snatched sometime before or on September 16, 2014.

Between September 16 and 27 the offender has made fraudulent transactions at the Ulverston branch of the Furness Building Society, on New Market Street.

PC Shaari Black said: “The victim was an elderly man and the money withdrawn was his pension. It is saddening that someone would resort to this behaviour and we will not tolerate this.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 and ask to speak to PC Shaari Black or alternatively you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
