A SUPERMARKET giant has won approval to transform an empty Grade II listed building on Kendal's high street into a new store.
Tesco received permission for external alterations at the former Millets store on Highgate at a meeting of South Lakeland District Council's planning committee this morning.
It was given the thumbs up despite objections from a neighbour who was worried about the potential disruption from delivery lorries.
Anne Goodman, who owns Mint Cake Cottage, which is 9m to the rear of the building, raised fears over noise issues but added: "We want a successful operation that allows residents and businesses to co-exist and controls need to be put in place to allow this."
Members agreed to a condition which will prohibit lorries from accessing the service yard between the hours of 9pm and 8am.
Mark Thomas, for Tesco, said discussions had taken place to find a happy medium for both parties.
He said 20 jobs will be created and the store will bring footfall to the town centre.
Cllr David Williams (Conservative, Windermere Bowness South) proposed approving the plan and it was seconded by David Fletcher (Lib Dem, Hawkshead).
There were eleven votes for, none against and one abstention.
