A HOLIDAYMAKER pleaded guilty to a series of driving offences after being caught drunk behind the wheel by police in Bowness.

John Caruana, 27, of Park Road, Lynemouth, was seen by officers reversing outside the Old England Hotel on February 7.

A court heard that they approached the car and saw that he was drunk.

Christie Hurst, prosecuting, said Caruana became 'aggressive and violent' when confronted and kept trying to put his keys back in the ignition.She went on to say that, he put up "a violent struggle to evade arrest."

A roadside breath test showed that Caruana was over the drink drive limit but when taken to the police station he was "too threatening and violent" for another test to be taken.

It was also discovered that the car belonged to Caruana's partner and he was not insured to drive it.
He was also found to have a provisional driving licence rather than a full one.

In mitigation, Chris Evans said that Caruana had gone to the car to charge his electronic cigarette and decided to "move it a short distance to a better parking place."

He said Caruana was "embarrassed about his conduct at the police station" and admitted he "over-reacted".

Caruana pleaded guilty to failing to provide a breath specimen, obstructing a constable in he execution of duty, using a vehicle without insurance and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence.

He was ordered to pay a total of £325, including costs and surcharges, and disqualified from driving for 24 months.
