RETIRED K Shoes worker David Kellet has become the new master of Kendal's Masonic lodge.

More than 120 Freemasons gathered to watch the installation ceremony, described by provincial communications officer Peter Clark as "the highest honour a lodge can confer on its members".

Union Masonic Lodge 129, at Station Road, is the oldest lodge in the Masonic province of Cumberland and Westmorland, and celebrated its 250th anniversary last summer.

Mr Kellet was elected by members, and to help him manage the lodge and its events he has appointed Terry Watton as senior warden and Michael Allen as junior warden for the coming year. Mr Watton, an IT developer, runs the provincial Masonic website, www.cumbriafreemasons.org

Last year, Kendal's Union Lodge welcomed The Westmorland Gazette for a behind-the-scenes feature, and communications officer Mr Clark said that the article was continuing to attract comments on social media such as Twitter as well as interest from as far afield as the USA.

Meanwhile, the Cumberland and Westmorland province has set itself the target of raising £1.75 million next year for the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution, which cares for Freemasons and their dependants.
