ALLOTMENT growers hope to increase the time they can tend their plots by 'spending a penny'.

Tenants at Castle Haggs allotments, opposite Fletcher Park in Kendal, are seeking planning approval for a members' toilet.

According to planning documents, several plots at Castle Haggs are rented by families with young children, as well as couples, some of whom live at a distance from the allotments.

With no toilet for plot holders, "the length of time they can spend at the site is limited", says Castle Haggs Allotment Association.

The proposed composting toilet, with steel-sheet walls and roof, would be suitable for people in wheelchairs, they say, and built on a plot shaded by trees that is less productive for growing food.

The association is considering taking more responsibility for running the Kendal Town Council-owned allotments, and so it is also seeking permission for a hut where tenants could hold meetings and social gatherings as well as store equipment.

The plans are before South Lakeland District Council.
