I have often heard the phrase: “He/she is too heavenly minded to be of any earthly use!”

The suggestion is that some people talk about faith and spirituality all the time, but seem unable to apply this to helping with the daily needs of others.

As a Christian I find this very disturbing firstly, because it is, unfortunately, very easy for the organised church to look detached from the hurts and struggles of those outside of it. A glib offer of prayer to someone who needs either some food on the table or a listening ear can so easily look like a callous brush-off; trite spiritual platitudes never helped anyone.

Secondly, this image does not reflect the real personality of Jesus. He was always practical in every way, and He still is today.

Jesus told His followers: “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another” (John 13:34).

This is far more than mere superficial emotion. He was saying that they should be devoted to each other practically, emotionally and spiritually, knowing the trials they would have to face as Christians.

He also said: “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44).

A Christian is called daily to put the needs of others before his own without ever expecting a reward. It means showing genuine, practical concern for those we know, those we don’t know, and even those who dislike us. The only way to achieve this is if we are permanently heavenly-minded, focussing on the person of Jesus Christ.
