PLAYERS from all over the UK will gather in Windermere on Sunday for the annual Lake District backgammon championship.

Reigning champion Graeme Turner from Newcastle is coming to defend his title in the contest at the Cedar Manor hotel, which is supported by the UK Backgammon Federation.

Among his challengers will be members of the local club which was formed after the inaugural contest was staged at the hotel last year.

They include 17-year-old Grange over Sands student Kate Watton who reached the semi-finals last year. The winner will receive a cash prize and a free weekend at the Cedar Manor.

Jonathan Kaye, owner of the Cedar Manor and organiser of the contest, said: “We were thrilled by the response for the first championship last year. It was a really exciting day, with some really top class players in action.

"Backgammon is growing in popularity and our monthly club has seen some terrific competition during the past year. We are looking forward to some gripping contests on Sunday.”
