CLIMATE change campaigners in Kendal joined thousands of people across the world for global day of action.

Members of South Lakes Action on Climate Change - Towards Transition (SLACC-TT) gathered in the town centre for Global Divestment Day which marked a turning point for the growing movement working to reduce investments in the fossil fuel industry.

The campaigners claim fossil fuel reserves, on which share values are based, will become worthless if the planet is to stand a chance of keeping the global temperature rise below the internationally agreed two degrees.

Organiser Claire Wickham, of SLACC-TT, said: "This subject sounds tricky but it is actually really simple. Organisations and individuals all have a choice where to put their money – from day to day bank accounts to major investments.

"We're asking people, through the global day of action, to choose not to profit from wrecking the planet. There are plenty of alternatives available, and the choice is increasing.”
