A PUBLIC consultation is being launched over a £2m package of road improvements to help people access some of the county’s best-loved destinations more easily and more safely.

The changes could mean road and footway improvements and more crossing opportunities for pedestrians for Glebe Road, Bowness-on-Windermere, and the A591 at Brockhole, Low Wood Bay and Town End, Grasmere.

MORE TOP STORIES: People are being invited to have their say and discuss the plans with Cumbria County Council. Drop-in sessions will taking place at:

•Grasmere Village Hall, Monday, April 13 from 3pm-6pm;

•Lake District Visitor Centre, Brockhole, Thursday April 16 from 11am-2pm;

and •Windermere Library, Thursday April 16 from 3pm-5pm.

Proposed improvements include narrowing carriageways, widening footways, improving bus stops and constructing courtesy crossing points for pedestrians.

Cllr Keith Little, Cumbria County Council cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “We want people to tell us what they think of the improvements, so they can be taken into account when we finalise plans for these key locations. Nothing is set in stone yet and we’d like to hear from as many people as possible.”

The plans will also be on public display at Lake District Visitor Centre, Brockhole from April 1-21 and will be available on the council’s website at www.cumbria.gov.uk/optimisingconnectivity. Any comments should be emailed to: sarah.williams@cumbria.gov.uk by April 22.

The proposals form the Optimising Connectivity project, which is being funded through the Local Growth Fund agreed between Government and Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership. Cumbria County Council is leading on the project and working closely with the Lake District National Park and South Lakeland District Council.

In addition, South Lakeland District Council, which owns and manages the foreshore and the Glebe, has committed to funding £200,000 for public realm improvements beside the Pump House Café. The improvements will form part of the Optimising Connectivity project and will be included in the public consultation.

All the proposals follow on from consultation events held in December 2014 and January 2015 which asked people about the transport issues they face at these locations.
