Peter Snow: Theatre by the Lake, Keswick

Journalist, presenter and author Peter Snow delivered a thoroughly entertaining talk about a fascinating - but sometimes overlooked - episode in British history.

With America having declared war on Britain in 1812 after disputes over its trade with France, Britain sent 4,000 troops across the Atlantic in 1814 to teach them a lesson.

After a decisive victory at Bladensburg, the force eventually reached Washington and, famously, set fire to the White house - recently vacated by President Madison and his wife, Dolley.

Peter Snow vividly brought to life the changing forces of both sides and the fascinating characters of those involved in the conflict.

And, after the interval, he answered questions from the audience on topics ranging from history to the forthcoming General Election and the potential threat from Russia and president Putin.

Engaging, enthusiastic and erudite, Peter Snow was great company for a very interesting evening.
