SOUTH Cumbria Musical Festival is one of the largest gatherings of its kind in the country with a huge array of speech, string, piano and vocal classes as well as brass and choral performances. This week The Westmorland Gazette continues its coverage with more results and words form this year's 39th festival.

ANOTHER memorable Gala Night provided a fantastic finale to this year's South Cumbria Musical Festival.

Ulverston's Coronation Hall resounded to the music of guest artistes Interactive, featuring former festival regular, vocalist Ben Lewis, as well as performances by competitors from a variety of classes throughout the festival.

Millom flautist Gavin Stewart won the top prize - the Esther C Croskery and Aprille C Bonner Performance Award, which was presented with a specially commissioned crystal trophy plus cash prize of £200.

The George Nicholls Young Musician of the Year Award, £100 and Furness Newspapers Trophy was awarded to Ulverston's Connor O'Hara, who had showed a high standard of performance across a range of classes.

Other awards announced were the Ulverston Town Bursary to Mathilda Kenny, the Barrow Bursary to Rebecca Salton, and the Millom Bursary to Freya Lupton.

Iona Lee was chosen for the European Summer School special award.

The evening's proceedings were brought to close by guests Barrow Operatic and Dramatic Society, giving a taster of its forthcoming show Sister Act.

Meanwhile, on the Wednesday adjudicator Sally Lane paid her first visit to the festival for the recorder, woodwind and strings classes.

In the younger age classes, Eloise Ozanne of Grange-over-Sands, landed a distinction in the recorder and woodwind solo classes up to and including school year six.

The Instrumental Bursary and Cumbria Crystal Loving Cup for a promising solo instrumentalist in age restricted classes also went to Eloise.

Iona Lee was awarded the Barrow Soroptimists Instrumental Trophy.

The evening session included woodwind classes with Gavin Stewart of Millom, Ulverston's Beth Godfrey and Iona Lee of Barrow, all commended for their performances.

Thursday's adjudicator was Andrea Calladine with the morning and afternoon sessions dedicated to schools choirs. Ms Calladine said she was very impressed by the standard of singing from all the schools.

St James' Catholic School, Millom, received the highest mark of 90 in the class for choirs up to and including school year six for an outstanding performance, and awarded the Forge Europa Shield and Bursary of £100.

Adult vocal classes took place in the evening, with performances covering a wide range of styles, including Songs from Shows, British composers, Gilbert and Sullivan, lied and unaccompanied folk song.

Friday brimmed with singing classes. In the choir class for ladies voice, The Ghyll Singers from Ulverston won with a mark of 88, narrowly beating Milnthorpe's Ottovoce, which received 87.

From the younger singers up to school year six, Ms Calladine selected Holly Clunie of Millom to receive the John F Jennings Young Singer's Bursary, and Preeya Fallowes, also of Millom, awarded the Julie Wills Vocal Bursary.

This year's festival included two new classes for musical theatre for school years seven-9 and 10-13; Oliver Banks of Barrow received a distinction for Where is Love from Oliver and Owen Thompson of Dalton also received a distinction for performing Empty Chairs and Empty Tables from Les Miserables.

Milnthorpe's Faye Bowness was awarded a distinction in two of her vocal solo classes and also in the duet class when she partnered Erin Still, also from Milnthorpe. Faye received the Georgina Hitchin Memorial Trophy and Bursary.

In the final class of the evening, Milli Rich received a distinction for her performance of Maybe This Time from Cabaret.

Festival chairman Keith Butcher praised accompanists Anthony Milledge and Zina Preston for all their hard work in preparing for and playing at the festival.

Keith said once again it had been a very successful festival. He added: "Our adjudicators have all been impressed with the high standard of performances from competitors. We are now looking ahead and beginning to prepare for our 40th festival in 2016".
