A MOTORIST who was seriously injured after his car struck a grass verge and rolled onto its side was found to be over the drink drive limit, a court heard.

South Cumbria Magistrates Court was told Raymond Lacey, 51, of Witherslack Hall Farm, Witherslack, was airlifted to hospital following the accident on December 20 last year.

A blood sample taken six hours later showed he had 198 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood - the legal limit is 80 milligrammes.

Police also discovered that the insurance policy on Lacey's vehicle had expired.

In mitigation, John Batty said 'personal pressures' had got on top of Lacey, who helps run an equestrian business with his wife, but he had not had a drink since.

He pleaded guilty to driving while over the limit and without insurance.

After hearing that it was Lacey's second drink drive offence in 10 years, magistrates handed him a 45-month driving ban.

He was ordered to undertake a community order with a six-month alcohol awareness initiative, and to pay a £300 fine, £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.
