THE former director of public health in Cumbria presented a programme on BBC Radio 4 looking at ways of tackling the country's housing crisis.

Healthier Homes? was presented by Professor John Ashton, who lives in Dent and is now president of the Faculty of Public Health.

He believes that by concentrating on the needs of older people, the housing problems of younger people can be tackled too.

He visited examples of future living and community support at St Anne's Alms houses in Appleby and at the 36 apartment Queen Elizabeth Court, Kirkby Lonsdale, to illustrate how his vision can be realised.

He spoke to a resident at Kirkby Lonsdale who told the programme: "There are 36 people living here which has relapsed 36 homes for other people.

"If these types of places were available more then with people living longer, when they reach an age where they need to consider living somewhere like this then it will release other places. I don't think it will solve housing problem but it could alleviate it in certain areas."
