VANDALS have caused around £400 worth of damage to a well-used bus shelter in Kendal.

Police are investigating after two plastic windows were smashed at the shelter on Rydal Road on Sandylands in the past fortnight.

Jonny Gios, from Sandylands Residents’ Association, explained how Cumbria County Council, the Kendal Local Area Partnership and the association clubbed together the £5,000 needed to build the shelter in 2013.

"The shelter has made a real improvement to the lives of many of Sandylands residents, enabling them to use our bus services without having to worry about getting cold and wet but thanks to the actions of some vandals it is no longer weather proof for them," said Mr Gios.

"It's a real shame that our community are going to so many lengths to raise money for a new play park for our children and young people.

"Yet, some individuals have vandalised the shelter, meaning money has to be sought to replace broken windows.

"Two plastic windows of the shelter have been smashed and will cost an estimated £400, money that could have gone towards our play park.

"I urge whoever did this vandalism to have the courage and responsibility to come forward."

This is not the first time the shelter has been set upon.

Kendal Town Council recently spent £400 repairing panels which had holes ‘melted’ through them.

"Kendal Town Council’s money comes from Kendal residents and should not have to be used to repair deliberate damage," added Mr Gios.
