POLICE in Cumbria are warning parents and young people of the dangers of a new craze called ‘Sleeper’.

It involves young people covering the mouths and noses of younger children or themselves until they pass out - agencies are warning that it is extremely dangerous and could lead to concussion or death.

There have been reported cases across the country, including Manchester, and police are urging young people not to try it in Cumbria.

DCI Roy Ledingham from Cumbria Constabulary said: “This is an extremely dangerous activity, and I am pleased that we currently have had no reports in Cumbria, and I hope it stays that way. What may seem like ‘fun’ at the time, could have potentially serious long-term consequences.

“I would urge all parents to be aware of this dangerous so called ‘game’, and warn their children of the possible devastating results. I would also appeal to young people to think before you act.”

Colin Cox, Director of Public Health said: “This is an exceptionally dangerous and reckless thing to do, it could easily end in tragedy. I think it’s important parents talk to their children about it and warn them of the potentially deadly consequences.”
