TOP Gear star James May visited his former university and ended up playing pool with the students.

The Lancaster University graduate came to look around the new engineering department on Tuesday, April 21, just a day before announcing he would not do Top Gear without Jeremy Clarkson.

May was up in the North West to meet the University’s Formula Student Race Car team, of which he is patron, and even offered to make some of the components for the 2016 car.

The former Pendle College student then paid a visit to a campus bar where he played pool with his friends and students.

He said: "It’s great to find the core of the University much the same as I remember it. The campus has probably doubled in size since my time, though, with buildings and facilities we could only dream of back in the eighties."

First year student Nicola Cook said: "It was great to meet him. We didn't want to bother him but he was so lovely and down to earth.

"He seemed to be enjoying being back on campus although I'm sure it's changed quite a bit since he was here!
