THE new chairman of Cumbria County Council said he is 'proud and delighted' to be elected into the role.

Cllr Mel Worth, member for Walney North, was handed the chain of office by outgoing Chairman Cllr Geoff Cook at a the council's Annual General Meeting at Kendal County Hall.

He has lived in Barrow for 40 years and worked for many years as an electrician and safety coordinator for Norweb.

“I am both proud and delighted to be elected to hold the honorary role of the council's chairman," he said. "I am looking forward to a busy and exciting year.

“I am very moved that I have been entrusted with this honour and I am really looking forward to representing Cumbria and its communities in the year ahead.”

Cllr Geoff Cook has been re-elected into the role as Vice-Chairman.
