A PEDESTRIAN remains in a stable condition in hospital after being being crushed between a car and a wall in Ambleside yesterday (April 27).

The 48-year-old suffered serious leg and chest injuries in the collision with a car in the Market Place just after 10am.

Emergency services were called to the scene where the injured Cambridge man was treated by paramedics before being airlifted to Royal Preston Hospital by the Great North Air Ambulance.

He was stable on arrival and his injuries are currently belived to be non life-threatening.

Firefighters had to cut the top of the white Toyota Prius to lift out the 77-year-old driver male from the Grasmere area.

Cumbria Police said the vehicle lost control before striking a parked car and the pedestrian, finally hitting the wall outside Detail.

The driver was taken to Royal Lancaster Infirmary by road ambulance but is not believed to have suffered any significant injuries.

A spokesperson for the North West Ambulance Service said two road ambulances and a Rapid Response Vehicle atteneded the scene.

The A591 southbound was blocked for two hours, causing serious congestion through the town.

The road reopened at 12.15pm.
