TWO new developments were recognised for their outstanding design, construction and general appearance at a meeting of Kendal Civic Society.

Each year the society gives an award to developments that in the eyes of members add to the attraction of the town. Past award winners have been Stricklandgate House and Gillinggate Health Centre.

There were two winners this year. The highly commended award went to Impact Housing, represented by John Lannaghan, for the development Noble's Place, at the entrance to Noble's Rest. For years this area was derelict and an eyesore, and now there are seven very attractive bungalows, thoughtfully designed with the elderly in mind.

The Design Award was won by Stephen Winter, of Winterbuild, for the new Castle Bailey housing development. It is built on the bailey of the 11th century castle which once stood at Castle Howe.

Martin Orrom, who selects the winners with Rob Tarbuck, described it as a lovely group of houses set around a central space and slmost hidden away, but with marvellous views over Kendal.
