STRIKING images representing Kendal's heritage have transformed a run-down and dilapidated subway into a bright piece of artwork.

Before local artist Zoe Baker decorated the underpass beneath the Oxenholme to Windermere railway line between Castle Oval and Rusland Park, it was dirty and covered in lewd graffiti.

But after a nine-day project it is now adorned with pictures including the River Kent, Kendal Castle, K Shoes, the legend of Dickie Doodle and Jump Into Kendal.

“It has been a pleasure to have created this for the residents who use the underpass," said Zoe, of Castle Street, Kendal.

"Their support has been fantastic. I have thoroughly enjoyed creating a piece of bright, informative art that will hopefully last decades."

Multi-media artist Zoe, who was kept going with cups of tea, biscuits and friendly banter during her task, was approached by Cllr Chris Hogg to see if she would be interested in decorating the tunnel after he spotted her painting a mural in Kendal Hostel's yard.

Permission was obtained from owners Network Rail and support gained from the Community Rail Partnership after Zoe submitted designs.

Finally she was able to get to work this month, using masonry paint, acrylics and varnish to portray scenes that reflected Kendal’s history.

Now Zoe is planning to work with Castle Park and Heron Hill primary schools on art projects linked to the tunnel piece.

The project was paid for by contributions from the community funds allocated to Cllr Hogg and his colleague Cllr Clare Feeney-Johnson.

Jim Trotman of the Lancaster-based Community Rail Partnership has nominated the project for the Community Rail Awards 2015.

Winners will be announced in Torquay on October 1.
