MORE than 2,000 participants will take part in the 16th Fred Whitton Challenge charity cycle ride on Sunday.

Starting and finishing at the Grasmere Sports Field, the 112-mile anti-clockwise route takes in all the Lakeland passes.

Organisers are this year on course to reaching their aimed total of £1 million raised for charity over the last 16 years of the event.

The ride is now recognised as the hardest one day cycle ride in Great Britain and once again the organisers had to hold a lottery to select the riders' places.
