THREE eggs have been laid in a week by female osprey KL nesting at Bassenthwaite.

Members of the Lake District Osprey Project (LDOP) confirmed the eggs are now being looked after by the ospreys – ringed female KL and an un-ringed male, believed to be the same male osprey which has also returned to the lake for a third year running.

Fran Currie, of the LDOP, said: “A clutch of two to three eggs is normal for an osprey, so it’s fantastic news that KL has laid three eggs for the second year running. This is made particularly special by the fact that KL and the un-ringed male have both returned to Bassenthwaite again, as ospreys are not always guaranteed to return to the same site.

Incubation is carried out mainly by the female and takes between 35 to 40 days, with the average being 37.
