A MAN who broke his ankle while out walking on the Cumbria Way was helped to safety by Coniston Mountain Rescue Team.

The casualty, from the North East, had been walking near Colwith Force Waterfall between Ambleside and Grasmere when he slipped on wet grass and broke his ankle at 1pm on Saturday, May 16.

Ambulance crews were treating the man with pain relief when the mountain rescue team arrived - he was then stretchered for half a mile into a waiting ambulance and taken to Royal Lancaster Infirmary.
