AN 81-year-old man who died in a car crash near Ulverston has been described as a 'well-known, fun-loving' character by his family.

John Bromley, from Roa Island, Barrow, died from injuries suffered in the collision which occurred at around midday, on the A5087 between Rampside and Roosecote, yesterday (Sunday, May 18).

Mr Bromley's blue Ford Fiesta collided with a white Ford Transit van, driven by a 29-year-old male from Barrow.

The driver of the van and a female passenger, aged 34 and also from Barrow, were taken to Furness General Hospital with serious but non life threatening injuries.

Mr Bromley’s family said: “A well-known character in the local boating and village communities, he was fun-loving and good for a joke.

"He was an accomplished mechanic, everything had to be perfect and he could strip and rebuild an engine with his eyes closed.

"He enjoyed beach combing and would often come back laden with his finds for which he always had grand plans, some of which would come to fruition.”

Police are investigating the cause of the collision and would like to speak to any witnesses. Contact Police on 101 with information.
