A PEACE garden created by Kendal Town Council to commemorate the centenary of 'the war to end all wars' is to be officially opened in Abbot Hall Park this afternoon (May 21).

Attending the ceremony at 2.30pm will be the town's mayor Cllr Tom Clare along with the Mayor of Rinteln in Germany, Herr Thomas Priemer, and the Mayor of Killarney in the Republic of Ireland, Cllr. John Joe Culloty - representing Kendal's two twin towns.

The centre piece is a four metre high peace pole made from a single piece of seasoned oak and carved with the internationally agreed words 'May Peace Prevail on Earth'.

The pole, which was erected on the 70th anniversary of VE Day, sits on a low, circular mound which represents the earth with peace at its centre. The mound has initially been sown with a mix of fast growing flowers because the permanent scheme involving perennial plants will take place this autumn.

Surrounding the pole are four planting quadrants with differing colours to symbolise the four seasons and time. At the edge of these beds there are zig zag lines of roses representing the lines of trenches and barbed wire of the First World War and also suggesting the earth has been torn in two. A grass path leads through the garden.
