WITH a week to go until the start of the Appleby Horse Fair 2015, joint encampment patrols by Cumbria Police and Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) are already taking place.

These patrols help ensure people travelling to the Fair are using the temporary stopping places available in North and South Cumbria and are adhering to the restrictions that are in place at some of the more popular locations.

Dr Robin Hooper, Chair of the Multi Agency Strategic Co-ordinating Group (MASCG) for Appleby Fair and the Chief Executive of Eden District Council, said: “I would again reiterate  our main message that Appleby Fair doesn’t start until June 4, so if you’re bringing your trailer (caravan) don’t arrive too soon.

“People travelling to Cumbria during the next few weeks should be aware of increased traffic volumes as people make their way to the Fair, which takes places from June 4-10. Motorists should take particular care on the A66, A69 and A686 as these routes are used by horse drawn vehicles (bowtops) travelling to the Fair.”

People who are bringing their trailers (caravans) or bowtops to Appleby Fair can find details of temporary stopping places at www.applebyfair.org

People using the temporary stopping places are asked to respect the local communities and use litter bins and other amenities provided.

Details of the pubs which are opening in Appleby and Kirkby Stephen during the Horse Fair are available at www.applebyfair.org.

A Voluntary Licensing Charter is in place for the Horse Fair’s duration for pubs, clubs and off licenses in Kirkby Stephen and Appleby. This starts in Kirkby Stephen on Saturday.

Dr Robin Hooper said: “The Voluntary Charter helps ensure that consistent standards are met in licensed premises during the Fair, with measures such as plastic glasses being introduced, door supervisory staff being in place and an agreed drinking up time, this all help to improve safety and reduce any instances of anti-social behaviour for Gypsies, Travellers, visitors and local residents.”
