THE mayors of Kendal's twin towns helped open a new peace garden in the town's Abbott Hall park.

Thomas Priemer, of Rinteln in Germany, and John Joe Culloty, of Killarney in Ireland, were joined by Cllr Tom Clare, former mayor of Kendal, for the opening ceremony.

The garden is designed to commemorate the First World War and features a four-metre high Peace Pole which was put up on the 70th Anniversary of VE Day.

Also in attendance was Rinteln's former mayor Karl Heinz Bucholz.

The detailed design of the garden and planting scheme was undertaken for Kendal Town Council by local firm Stephenson Halliday with specialist advice by engineering consultants Curtins.

Much of the work was undertaken by the Kendal offices of Continental Landscapes and Horticare.

Electricity North West donated its expertise by transporting and raising the Peace Pole, which was shaped by Kendal College from a four ton block of seasoned oak.
