NOT a petal, bud or bloom escaped the close scrutiny of more than 200 garden lovers as crowds flocked to Troutbeck’s renowned biennial Village Garden Trail.

After weeks of weeding, mowing and hoeing, 13 private gardens opened their gates to welcome a constant stream of visitors following the trail on foot round one of Lakeland’s prettiest villages.

They were rewarded with home-made teas served in Troutbeck Institute by an army of dedicated volunteers. Locals and visitors relished the chance of a good look at other people’s gardening efforts, and took a lively interest in the impressive array of varieties and growing conditions, swapping tales of frosted camellias and the devious devices that gardeners resort to in the perennial battle against marauding deer, hungry rabbits and slugs.

The afternoon ended in glorious sunshine to add an even rosier glow to the hard-earned success of Troutbeck’s big community event, which raised around £3,000 towards the upkeep of the Institute.
