LOCAL animal lovers are invited to help raise funds for the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust.

At a special event on June 26, Paul Smith, an equine vet from the Westmorland Veterinary Group, is to speak about his trip last year to the West African country, where families' livelihoods often depend on a horse or donkey.

Paul spent a fortnight volunteering for the charity, giving veterinary care to working donkeys and horses in the village of Sambel Kunda, and also helping to train local livestock assistants, as vets are rare in the Gambia.

Tickets for the all-day event at Newton Rigg College, Penrith, can be purchased for £25 at uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/VwHP2015

There is also to be a charity cruise and buffet on Ullswater that evening, departing from Glenridding pier at 7.30pm. Tickets from the Westmorland Veterinary Group, Kendal or Kirkby Lonsdale, or phone 01539-722692.
