A PLANNED new takeaway in Grange could be to told to close its doors in the afternoon in a bid to stop schoolchildren from being tempted to visit.

A proposal to convert an empty butchers and the former Grange Now office on Main Street, close to a bus stop, was submitted to South Lakeland District Council last month.

Since then it has attracted criticism from locals who claim the takeaway is not needed, would bring unwelcome litter and noise to the area and attract anti-social behaviour from drinkers in nearby pubs.

If the green light is given the new business would sell kebabs, burgers and pizza between noon and 11pm seven days a week, according to planning documents.

But SLDC's environmental health expert Graham Metcalfe said the potential to close the takeaway around school leaving time should be explored.

“It has been brought to my attention that there is a school bus stop outside the premises," he wrote in response to the plan.

“Consideration should be given to school children coming off the bus in the afternoon and consuming high calorie food leading to obesity and ill health.

“This aspect should be researched and consideration given to closing the premises between 3.30pm until 4.30pm Monday to Friday.”

The plans have been submitted by Warrington-based Kaya Huyuk, who also has a store - the Charcoal Grill - in Bowness.

SLDC's planning committee will meet later this year to decide on its fate.
