MOUNTAIN rescue teams joined forces at the weekend to go to the aid of injured people in the Lake District.

Rescuers were called out three times on Saturday alone after a runner, walker and swimmer were left injured in separate incidents.

Wasdale MRT was first called out at 3.40pm to a man who had suffered a head injury while entering the water in pools near Lingcove Bridge, Upper Eskdale.

The North West Air Ambulance Service were first on the scene and treated the casualty before the 14-strong team packaged him for evacuation.

He was winched aboard a helicopter from RAF Boulmer which flew him to hospital.

Only hours later at 7.24pm the team along with Cockermouth MRT was called to aid a man with a hip injury on Great Gable, above Beck Head.

The man was taken to safety at Black Sail Hut, an Ennerdale hostel.

Duddon and Furness MRT was called at 8.18pm to Seatallan, north of Wast Water, to help a fell runner who sustained who had fallen around 70 metres - sustaining leg, back and slight head injuries in the plunge.

With thick cloud at the location, an RAF SAR helicopter which had initially landed at Greendale Tarn had to descend before members could reach it with the casualty.

MORE TOP STORIES: The runner was then taken by stretcher 'in very difficult conditions' to the waiting helicopter below the cloud base before being airlifted to hospital.

And on Friday (June 26) the two teams went to the aid of a walker with a painful leg injury near the top of Scafell Pike.

No longer able to walk, he was carried down the mountain in an operation which lasted more than five hours.
