FROM crashing waves to bustling piers, the National Trust is asking people to record and share their favourite 'sounds of our shores' to help build a crowd-sourced soundscape of the nation’s coastline.

The coastal sounds will be hosted on a map on the British Library website and added to the British Library Sound Archive. They will also inspire an original piece of music created by musician and producer Martyn Ware, a founder member of Human League.

“There’s something really evocative about the sounds of our coast,’ says Cheryl Tipp, curator of wildlife and environment sounds at the British Library.

“They help shape our memories of the coastline and immediately transport us to a particular time or place whenever we hear them.”

To take part in the project, which runs until September 21, people can record a sound from anywhere on the UK’s 10,800 mile coastline from beaches to ports, cliffs to seaside towns.

Each sound should be an audio or video clip up to five minutes long and can be uploaded along with a location, images and a description to the map.
