HUNDREDS of determined walkers joined the march to raise money for a charity committed to improving the lives of the terminally ill.

More than 450 people took part in the sponsored 'Walk to Remember' in a bid to amass £35,000 for St Mary's Hospice, Ulverston, which provides specialised supportive and palliative care for people with life limiting conditions throughout South Cumbria.

Walkers took on two routes, an 11mile jaunt starting in Ulverston at the hospice at 9am on Friday, June 26, or a seven mile trek that started and finished in Barrow.

Speaking about the event, Emma Athersmith, Fundraising Manager for St Mary’s Hospice, said: "There was a fantastic party atmosphere for our ‘Walk to Remember’ with many people celebrating the lives of family members and friends, and showing their support with photos on T-shirts.

"The rain stayed away for the whole evening, our supporters really enjoyed both the 11mile and seven mile walks.

"Over the last 25 years we have been able to support more than 15,000 people in our local area, through in Patient and Out Patient facilities at the Hospice, our Hospice at Home service and Community Neighbours scheme.

"It costs over £2.4 million a year to run St Mary’s Hospice, and donations from our generous supporters account for 80 per cent of the funding which enables the Hospice to keep helping people, so events like the Walk to Remember are absolutely vital and hugely appreciated."
